How to build a DVD cabinet

When making your own DVD cabinets it is important to measure the size correctly in order to have the right amount of space, and the right number of shelves, to house your entire collection in a solid and secure wooden frame.

DVD cabinets are a commonplace piece of furniture in the modern home. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be tailored to suit the owner's exacting needs based on the size of their collection.

Preparation

  1. Measure the amount of space you have to fit the cabinet into, recording the height, width and depth of the area available, using the tape measure.
  1. Calculate how many shelves you will need for your DVDs by multiplying the number of DVDs by 0.5 inches, to find the width of shelving required.
  1. Divide this number by the width of available space, minus 1 inch for sides of the cabinet itself.
Cutting the Wood
  1. Cut two 1/2-inch-thick pieces of wood, using the saw, to a length of 1 inch plus 10 times the number of shelves required, plus half times one less than the number of shelves required. These will form the sides of the cabinet. For example, if you require three shelves, the length of the pieces will be 32 inches: 1 + 10 x 3 + 0.5 x (3-1) = 32 inches.
  2. Determine how many strips of 1/2 inch-thick wood you'll need to make the number of shelves required, plus one additional shelf.
  3. Cut these pieces to be equal in length to the shelving width you calculated earlier, using the saw. For example, if you need three shelves each 12 inches wide to fit all your DVDs, cut four pieces of 1/2-inch-thick wood, each 12 inches long.
  4. Cut a final piece of 1/2-inch-thick wood of length equal to the height of your cabinet's side pieces and width equal to the width of your shelves, plus 1 inch. This will form the back of your cabinet.
Building the Cabinet
  1. Measure 10.5 inches from the base of one of your side panels and mark this point with a line. This is where your first shelf will be attached.
  2. Measure up another 10.5 inches and make another line.
  3. Repeat until you have marked off the position of all your shelves.
  4. Apply wood glue to one side of your first shelf. Stick the shelf to the base of your side panel.
  5. Hammer two nails into the shelf through the side panel, an inch in from either end of the shelf. This will reinforce the shelf.
  6. Glue one side of the next shelf and stick it to the side panel just above where you drew the first line.
  7. Nail this shelf in place with two more nails.
  8. Repeat for the other shelves.
  9. Glue and nail the final panel to the top of the side panel, to form a roof on the cabinet.
  10. Glue the open ends of the shelves and the top panel.
  11. Attach the second side panel to the shelves.
  12. Nail each shelf and top panel in place with two nails.
  13. Glue the back of the shelves and side panels.
  14. Press the back panel against the cabinet.
  15. Nail it in place with three nails on either side.
After your cabinet is built, consider painting or varnishing it to better match the other furniture in your room. This will help the new cabinet to blend in and become a feature of your room.
