How To Survive In A Men's Prison

1. When you walk through that door you will be considered fresh meat. Everything you possess will be in jeopardy. This includes but not limited to your dignity and self respect. Whether you survive or not, depends on how you carry yourself as a man. It's okay to be afraid as long as you can contain your fear and learn real fast how to turn it around. Beware of those that want to be your friend at first. They just want to gain your trust, so they can see your vulnerabilities. You will be tried almost immediately. Someone will find a way to see if you are a man or a mouse. If you back down from your first encounter, you will be marked as weak by the other inmates. This will make them try you even more. Don't be nice to anyone. Don't smile no more than you have to. Always look at the person who is talking to you. Look them in the eye with calmness. Don't let yourself be intimidated. Your first encounter may be a bloody one but it doesn't have to be. Prison inmates are divided into groups by their own choice. Find your group and stick with it. If you stay away from sex, drugs and gambling you stand a better chance of survival. No one is going to respect you unless you respect yourself and respect is something you will have to earn.

2. Find something constructive to do. Most prisons have an education program. This will be especially important to you if you plan on getting out someday. Other inmates will respect you if they see you are trying to better yourself. But don't rub it in by bragging about what you have accomplished. If you think you have enough education, maybe you can find a constructive hobby. Art, woodworking, leather craft etc. That depends on what your new home has to offer. But don't take up gambling as a hobby. It's never profitable, especially for the new fish. I've seen new guys come in and try to act tough and start gambling with the hard cons and end up seriously injured or dead because of an unpaid gambling debt. So think smart. Don't ever bite off more than you can chew. If you try to get an education, get it from books, not convicts. There's ways to spend time in prison. Some are good and some are bad. It's up to you to choose the right ones.

Your New Home

3. Okay it's time to see the parole board. You've done the required minimum amount of time it takes to have a hearing. But that's not all you are going to need when you go to your hearing. They will look at the file you have accumulated during your stay here. You better have good conduct. Don't even bother to go in there if you just got out of the hole for stabbing some guy or even just a fist fight, recently. Leave any and all excuses for your bad behavior, outside. They don't listen to any excuses. Have more education than you did when you came in. When they start talking about your case, you better be ready to confess your sins. DON'T even start trying to convince them that you are innocent and that you were wrongly convicted. Save that for your attorney. The parole board will not give you parole if you say you are innocent. Parole is for the guilty only. Court is for the innocent.

4. You've made parole you are on your way back into society. But wait, it's not over yet. It takes time to do the paperwork. While you are waiting, you are going to be on pins and needles. You can't wait to be with your family and friends. That is if you still have any friends. Don't forget that you had to make a transition into prison, now you have to make a safe exit out. Some guys don't make it home after making parole. The first thing they want to do is start reminding the other cons that they've made parole and that they're going home. That's a no no. Some convicts will get jealous and do what ever they can to stop you from going out that door. This is when you have to learn to keep your mouth shut. It's better if no one knows you are getting out except maybe your friends you have acquired since you've been in the joint. Other convicts. You will become so anxious to get on with your life, you'll even have thoughts of escaping, but hang in there, a new day will come.

Good Luck!
