You have already started an account of MapleStory and want to make a mage. Make a name for your guy and change your look to your liking.
Now for the stats. The ideal stats for a beginner that is going to be a mage is:
This roll maximizes the attack of your mage. It could take a while but keep at it.
Every time you level, you will get 5 Ability Points (AP). Your LUK should stay at least 3 above your level. Everything else goes into INT.
After creating your character, you will end up in Maple Island. This is the place you should stay until level 8. You will also get your beginner skills. They are:
Due to mages not being strong you should stay with green snails. They are the easiest and you get the most exp per hit.
Level 1-10: Green Snails, maybe Blue Snails.
Oh, and NEVER EVER put any AP into STR or DEX.
Now that your level 8, you can take the boat to Victoria Island.
Once you are in Victoria Island you need to talk to Olaf. He directs you to Ellinia and gives you exp.
To get to Ellinia you have two options. You can walk from Lith Harbor to Henesys to Ellinia or you can take the cab. The Taxi offers discount prices to Beginners (90% off). If you do not have enough mesos then it is advised to walk or follow someone powerful.
The beginning of a mage is very hard a discouraging. You will run out of MP often and need pots.
In Ellinia, go to the very top and go into the house. Inside you will find Grendel the Really Old. Talk to him and you will become a mage. You will gain HP and A LOT of MP.
You will also get 1 Skill Point (SP). Put it in Energy Bolt unless you feel otherwise.
This is for a first time mage. It also saves money because you max Improving Max MP Increase early on. Also every time you level, you will heal more MP every ten seconds.
This is if you want Magic Armor instead of Magic Guard. If you are going to be a cleric, this would be a good build. The only problem is you will not be able to max Magic Armor.
This build is for those that do not want Magic Claw and want Energy Bolt instead (Not recommended).
This is the true hell build. You will have to stick with snails for a couple of levels. This makes a mage even harder. Because you do not have a magic attack, you will have to stick with your axe/sword/club/razor/fruit knife.
Mages get stronger in the later levels. Here is a chart for training:
Note that grinding can get very boring and it's good to explore maple. If you feel that the monster is too hard or easy, move down or up, respectively.
Now that you are level 30, you can go to the Second Job. The three jobs for the Second Job are Cleric, Fire/Poison Wizard and the Ice/Lightning Wizard.
Clerics have the ability to heal themselves and party members. They are highly sought after in parties. They also have the ability to raise Weapon Attack and Weapon Defense.
F/P Wizards, to me, are the weakest due to Poison. But the world can not do without them. They are strong in soloing.
I/L Wizards can mob monsters with their Lightning attack. They can also freeze enemies with their Cold Beam. With this in mind, choose wisely.
